Not Well Known, But Well
Worthwhile
By Roger A. Scully, Jr.
Though the Banner of Truth lectureship is not the most popular in the brotherhood, and not the best attended,
anyone who attends would have to admit that it is biblically sound, and that it is a great tool of edification. Brother
Walter Pigg, the editor of the Banner of Truth paper, directs the program, and is a man whom we hold in high regard
for his long life of dedication to God’s truth and continued love for that which is pure. Yearly he designs a program
centered around a needed theme with topics designated to defend the gospel and remind the faithful of the reason
we fight the good fight of the faith. This year’s program was no different, centering on the theme of the need for and
basis of optimism within the Lord’s church. I personally found the theme to be more than needed seeing as how we
are faced with perilous times, which easily discourage the faithful. Nonetheless, the victory has been promised to
those who are willing to fight a good fight, finish the course, and keep the faith. The only down side to the program
was that it was not better attended.
Understanding that there are many things which can arise to prevent even those who are most desirous from
attending we would like to encourage everyone to get a copy of the audio and video from the program. We are
confident that those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will be well filled by 28 sermons presented by faithful
men whom I am pleased to call brethren in Christ. These men were not concerned with pushing any type of personal
agenda, but were only interested in making proclamation of God’s truth. We pray that this will continue to be each of
their focus in years to come.
In addition to the wholesome words that were spoken, I feel compelled to mention the ardent fellowship. Many old
friendships were rekindled, and many new ones were initiated. The young learned from the old, and the old were
encouraged by the young. Scriptures were discussed, jokes were told, conversations were held, and bellies were
filled. Then, just as quickly as it came, it was over. Oh, how I wonder what heaven must be like.
Let it be suggested that those who are able make plans to attend next year. Though this lectureship is not well
known, it is well worthwhile, as all who attend can attest.
