THE GOLDEN COMPASS
By Roger A. Scully, Jr.
Though many atheist claim that they do not seek to convert people to their religion, and that they would never
target children, the veracity of their claims are shown to be counterfactual due to their actions. Further, the atheist
claim they are protected by freedom of choice and freedom of speech, and support the concept of everyone
choosing for themselves that in which they place belief. Yet, once again, their actions show their claims to be
delusive. Allow it to be explained: On 7 December 2007 a children’s movie starring Nicole Kidman will be released
titled: The Golden Compass. The film is based on a children’s book, which is the first of a trilogy called: His Dark
Materials, written by renowned atheist Phillip Pullman. Though the books are children’s books and the movie is
going to be marketed to children, presented as a sort of Narnia type epic, the truth is the movie has an undertone
which promotes atheism, even referring to Christianity as a system which seeks to “control, destroy, [and] obliterate
every good feeling.”
The series author has stated, “I don’t profess any religion; I don’t think it’s possible that there is a God; I have the
greatest difficulty in understanding what is meant by the words ‘spiritual’ and ‘spirituality.’” In 2003 he stated, “My
books are about killing God.” In fact, the books end with a being called YAHWEH (which is the biblical name for God,
translated as Lord in the KJV and Jehovah in the ASV), being killed by a young boy and girl, who depict Adam and
Eve; hence allowing everyone to do what they please. Another character in the book makes this statement about
Christianity, “a very powerful and convincing mistake.” The author has also publicly stated his hatred for C. S. Lewis
and his Chronicles of Narnia. He says his trilogy shows the other side.
The hope seems to be that children will want to see the movie, then want the books, which would make a good
Christmas gift. Pullman said he wants “children to read the books and decide against God and the kingdom of
heaven.”
What’s worse, the books have sold over 15 million copies world wide, and have won the Carnegie Medal for
children’s literature in 2005 and in 2007. In 2007 the books were awarded the Carnegie Carnegies for the best
children’s book of the past 70 years. The final book in the series, titled The Amber Spyglass, won The Whitebread
Prize in 2001, making it the first children’s book to ever do so.
Without doubt this movie is going to be advertised a great deal, and made to be very appealing to children. It has
star power, with big name actors, and will be promoted by talk shows, etc. I have never been one who is much for
jumping on the bandwagon of boycotts, but I do believe this one is worthwhile. I will not see the movie, or purchase
anything associated with it. In fact, I have also decided to refrain from attending any theatre which shows the film, so
long as it is being shown in that theatre. Yes, it is true, they are after our children, hence they are trying to destroy
our home, hence our society.
